Company D, 1st Wisconsin Cavalry
Johnson was born in Dorset (Bennington County), Vermont on August 27, 1847. He was residing in Hustisford (Dodge County), Wisconsin when he enlisted and was mustered as a 17-year old private on October 6, 1864. Johnson served about 10 months with the regiment. He was mustered out on July 29, 1865.
The 1st Wisconsin Cavalry was involved in the capture of Confederate President Jefferson Davis at Irwinsville, Georgia on May 10, 1865.
Johnson died on August 29, 1939 at the age of 92 years. He is buried in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Indianola (Red Willow County), Nebraska. At the time of his death, he was the last member of the Indianola Post (#154) of the Grand Army of the Republic.
