Mayfield was born on August 22, 1838. He was residing in Falls City, Nebraska when he enlisted into the 2nd Nebraska Cavalry on March 10, 1863. He was mustered into the service on March 23, 1863. Private Mayfield served 9 months with the regiment and was mustered out of the service on December 23, 1863.
The 2nd Nebraska Cavalry was organized in the fall of 1862 to protect the Nebraska Territory from an Indian uprising. Eight of the twelve companies were assigned to the Dakota Territory and were involved in the “Indian Wars”. Four of the twelve companies stayed in the Nebraska Territory and were assigned to guard duty on the Indian Reservations.
George Mayfield died on September 21, 1922 at the age of 84 years. He is buried in the Riverview Cemetery in Louisville (Cass County), Nebraska. He was the last member of the Vanscoyes Post (#175) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Louisville.
