William J Bell was born in 1842. The exact date of his birth was not available. He was living in Wayne County, Indiana when he enlisted and was mustered in the regiment. Bell served less than 60 days with the outfit. He was mustered out on October 3, 1862 at Evansville, Indiana.
The 78th Indiana Infantry was organized at Indianapolis, Indiana for 60 days. The outfit was assigned to guard duty at Evansville, Indiana and operations against guerrillas in Kentucky. The unit was mustered out on October 3, 1862.
Bell died October 12, 1942 at age of 99 years. He is buried in the West Cedar Valley Cemetery in Elgin (Antelope County), Nebraska. Bell was the last member of the Hayes Post (#327) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Elgin.
