Hoerner was born in Pennsylvania on December 30, 1846. He was residing in Monmouth (Warren County), Illinois when he enlisted in the regiment on November 13, 1863. He was mustered in on December 3, 1863 and sered about 2 ½ years with the outfit. He was mustered out on May 29, 1866 at Houston, Texas.
Company L of the 12th Illinois Cavalry was organized at Springfield, Illinois between December 30, 1863 to January 12, 1864. During his enlistment, he unit was assigned to duty in several southern states.
Hoerner died on July 23, 1929 at the age of 82 years. He is buried in the Grant Evergreen Cemetery in Talmage (Nemaha County), Nebraska. He was the last member of the Roberts Post (#104) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Talmage. In addition, he was a member of the Indianola Post (#154) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Indianola.
