Private John P. Spellman
Company A, 9th Iowa Infantry
Spellman was born in Vermont on August 15, 1843. He was residing in Charlotte (Clinton County), Iowa when he enlisted on August 15, 1861. Spellman was mustered on September 24, 1861. He served about 17 months and was discharged on February 15, 1863 at St Louis for disability.
The 9th Iowa Infantry was organized and mustered at Dubuque, Iowa on September 24, 1861. During Spellman’s enlistment the regiment fought at the Battle of Pea Ridge in Arkansas. The battle was very costly. Thirty-four (34) soldiers were killed, 184 were wounded, and 2 were reported missing.
Spellman died on November 18, 1931 at the age of 88 years. He is buried in the Cedar View Cemetery in Doniphan (Hall County), Nebraska. Spellman was a member of the Smith Post (#65) of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in Doniphan. In addition, he was a member of the Thornburg Post (#27) of the GAR in Clarks.
