Private James Welstead
Company I, 136th New York Infantry
Welstad was born in Allegany County, New York on February 20, 1844. He enlisted as an 18-year old private at Nunda, New York on August 30, 1862. Welstead was mustered on September 25, 1862 and served a little over 4 months with the regiment. He was discharged on February 2, 1863 at Washington DC due to disability.
Welstead died on February 7, 1940 (age of 95 years) and is buried in the Ridge Cemetery in Fremont (Dodge County), Nebraska. He was the last member of the McPherson Post (#4) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Fremont.
