Grant was born in Lewisburg (Hartford County), Connecticut on November 9, 1838. He was living in Freeport (Stephenson County), Illinois when he enlisted in the 67th Illinois Infantry on June 2, 1862. He was mustered on June 13, 1862 and served about 4 months. He was mustered out October 6, 1862 at Camp Douglas, Illinois. The unit was organized at Camp Douglas on June 13, 1862 for 3 months and was mustered out on October 6, 1862.
He rejoined the military in 1864 as a member of Company H of the 8th Illinois Cavalry. He enlisted and was mustered on October 14, 1864 and served 9 months. He was mustered out on July 17, 1865 at Benton Barracks, Missouri.
Grant died on December 24, 1923 at the age of 85 years. He is buried in the Emerick Cemetery in Meadow Grove (Madison County), Nebraska. He was the last member of the Emerick Post (#246) of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in Emerich, Nebraska. In addition, he was a member of the Emerick Post (#313) of the GAR in Newman Grove, Nebraska.
