Lewis was born in Missouri on February 2, 1848. He was living in Brownville, Nebraska when he enlisted on February 20, 1864 in the 1st Nebraska Battalion Cavalry. Lewis was 16 years old when he enlisted. He was mustered in on March 19, 1864 and served about 16 months. The unit was consolidated with the 1st Nebraska Cavalry on July 5, 1865. Lewis served 5 additional months and was reported as a deserter on December 3, 1865.
Lewis died on May 6, 1939 at the age of 91 years. He is buried in the Blue Mound Cemetery in Milford (Seward County), Nebraska. He was a member of the Russell Post (#77) of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) at Fairbury. In addition, he was a member of the Winslow Post (#56) of the GAR in Milford.
