An exact date for his date of birth was not available. Ohio enlistment records indicate that he was 33 years old when he enlisted in 1861. He was probably born in 1828. He enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on September 23, 1861. He served over 3 years and was mustered out on November 9, 1864.
The 18th Ohio Infantry was organized at Athens, Ohio between August 16 and September 28, 1861. During his enlistment the unit fought at the Battle of Stone’s River (TN) (December 30-31, 1862 – January 1-3, 1863) and the Battle of Chickamauga (GA) (September 19-21, 1863). The Battle of Stone’s River was the most costly engagement for the unit. In several days of fighting, the regiment lost 25 soldiers and 63 were wounded.
Ellis died on November 9, 1892. He is buried in the Venango Cemetery in Venango (Perkins County), Nebraska. The Ellis Post (#341) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Venango was named for Ellis.
