Inman’s date of birth was not available. He was living in Washington, Wisconsin when enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on September 7, 1861. He served over 3 years before being mustered out on October 31, 1864.
The 12th Wisconsin Infantry was organized at Madison, Wisconsin between October 18 and December 13, 1861. The regiment was assigned to the Siege of Vicksburg (MS) (May 22-July 4, 1863) and the Siege of Atlanta (GA) (July 22-August 25, 1864). The casualties during the Siege of Atlanta were 42 killed, 150 wounded, and 22 captured. Private Inman was wounded on July 21, 1864.
Inman died on October 26, 1881. He is buried in the O’Neill Cemetery in O’Neill (Holt County), Nebraska. The Inman Post (#183) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Inman and the village of Inman is named for him.
