Vandewege was born on September 6, 1850. He was living in Holland, Wisconsin when he enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on February 3, 1865. If the date of birth is correct, Vandewege was 14 years old when he enlisted. He served about 7 months and was mustered out on September 4, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.
The 47th Wisconsin Infantry was organized and mustered at Madison, Wisconsin on February 27, 1865. It was assigned to Tennessee and provided railroad guard duty on the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad.
Vandewege died on March 16, 1926. He is buried in the Holland Cemetery in Holland (Lancaster County), Nebraska. He was one of the last members of the Wyman Post (#101) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Firth, Nebraska.
