Private Basil Burgess
Company D, 1st Nebraska Infantry
Burgess was born in Indiana in either 1842 or 1843. Enlistment records indicate that he was 28 years old when he enlisted and was mustered as a corporal on June 10, 1861. Burgess was reduced to the rank of private (at his request) on April 4, 1862. He died of disease on May 1, 1862 at Crump’s Landing, Tennessee.
The Burgess Post (#328) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Spencer, Nebraska is named for him.
