Hurt was born in Logan County, Illinois on April 29, 1842. He was residing in Lincoln (Logan County), Illinois when he enlisted on March 12, 1864. He was mustered on March 14, 1864 and transferred to the 2nd Illinois Consolidated Cavalry in 1865. He was mustered out on November 22, 1865 at San Antonio, Texas.
Hurt joined the regiment in the final stages of the Civil War and saw duty in several southern states.
Hurt died on January 8, 1934 at the age of 91 years. He is buried in the Clay Center Cemetery in Clay Center (Clay County), Nebraska. He was a charter member and the last member of the Jordan Post (#239) of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in Clay Center. In addition, he was a member of the Greeley Post (#39) of the GAR in Atkinson, Nebraska.
