Wagner was born on March 20, 1846. He was living in Liberty, Wisconsin when he enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on February 6, 1865. The 18 year served about 7 months and was mustered out of the regiment on September 4, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.
The 47th Wisconsin Infantry was organized and mustered at Madison, Wisconsin on February 27, 1865. It was assigned to Tennessee and provided railroad guard duty on the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad.
Wagner died on November 22, 1926 at the age of 80 years. He is buried in the Arapahoe Cemetery in Arapahoe (Furnas County), Nebraska. He was a charter member and probably the last member of the Resaca Post (#322) of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in Creston, Nebraska. In addition, he was a member of the Garrett Post (#120) of the GAR in Arapahoe.
