Mahaffey was born on January 1, 1846. He enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on May 19, 1864. He served about 3 ½ months and was mustered out on September 3, 1864.
Very little history exists on Mahaffey’s unit other than it was a 100-day unit during the summer of 1864.
Mahaffey died on November 9, 1933 at the age of 87 years. He is buried in the Bennett Cemetery in Bennett (Lancaster County), Nebraska. At the time of his death, he was the last member of the Upright Post (#62) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Bennett.
