Dorsey was born in Brook County, Virginia on October 16, 1842. He was residing in Bernadotte (Fulton County), Illinois when he enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on March 7, 1865. The 22 year old farmer served for 4 months and was mustered out of the unit on July 13, 1865.
Dorsey died on March 26, 1926 at the age of 83 years. He is buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Grant (Perkins County), Nebraska. He was a charter member of the Ellis Post (#341) of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in Venango, Nebraska. In addition, he was a member of the Anderson Post (#32) of the GAR in York, Nebraska.
