Sergeant Benoni Whittemore

Company K, 50th Wisconsin Infantry

Whittemore was born on April 1, 1831. He was living in Janesville (Rock County), Wisconsin when he enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on February 4, 1865. Whittemore served 16 months and was mustered out on June 14, 1866.

The 50th Wisconsin Infantry was organized at Madison in March/April 1865. The unit was moved to the Benton Barracks (St Louis) and stayed there until May 3, 1865. The regiment was deployed to Fort Rice, Dakota Territory until May 1866. The unit was mustered out between April 19 and June 12, 1866.

Whittemore died on May 12, 1915 at the age of 84 years. He is buried in the Sheridan Cemetery in Auburn (Nemaha County), Nebraska. He was a charter member of the Polock Post (#103) of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in Brownville, Nebraska. In addition, he was a member of the Carley Post (#173) of the GAR in Auburn.
