Green was born in Canada on June 4, 1845. The 19 year old farmer was living in Quincy (Adams County), Illinois when enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on March 8, 1865. Green enlisted for 1 year and served about 9 months. He was mustered out on December 16, 1865 at Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
Green died on June 13, 1927 at the age of 82 years. He is buried in the West Cedar Valley Cemetery in Elgin (Antelope County), Nebraska. He was a charter member of the Terry Post (#316) of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in Neligh, Nebraska. In addition, he was a member of the Hayes Post (#327) of the GAR in Elgin, Nebraska.
