Rankin was born in Illinois on October 13, 1846. The 18-year old farmer enlisted for 1 year. He was mustered on February 18, 1865. Rankin served about 10 months with the regiment. He was mustered out on December 16, 1865 at Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
Rankin died on May 10, 1932 at the age of 85 years. He is buried in the Sunset Cemetery in Cedar Rapids (Boone County), Nebraska. At the time of his death, he was the last member of the Caddell Post (#74) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Cedar Rapids. Records from the Sunset Cemetery indicate that his last name was spelled “Ranken”.
