Fablinger was born in Washington County, Maryland on March 6, 1846. The 19 year old was living in Hanover (Jo Daviess County), Illinois when he enlisted and was mustered in the 96th Illinois Infantry on February 23, 1865. He enlisted for 1 year and served a little over 3 months. He transferred to the 21st Illinois Infantry on June 9, 1865 and served until December 16, 1865. Fablinger was mustered out at San Antonio, Texas.
Fablinger died on January 15, 1917 at the age of 70 years. He is buried in the McCain Cemetery in Stapleton (Logan County), Nebraska. He was one of the last members of the Doan Post (#226) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Gandy, Nebraska.
