Marsh was born in Maine on November 1, 1846. He was residing in Black Earth (Dane County), Wisconsin when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on August 29, 1864. Marsh served about 21 months before he was discharged on May 28, 1866.
The 4th Wisconsin Cavalry was organized as the 4th Wisconsin Infantry in Racine in 1861. It was converted to a cavalry unit in the middle of the Civil War. During Marsh’s enlistment, the regiment was assigned to duties in Louisiana.
Marsh died on March 20, 1933 at the age of 86 years. He is buried in the Cedar View Cemetery in Doniphan (Hall County), Nebraska. Marsh was a member of the Champion Post (#301) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Champion, Nebraska.
