Series highlights

"It's been a tremendous uphill struggle," Southern California coach Rod Dedeaux said before the championship game against Missouri.

What he didn't know was that the toughest part was still ahead as the game went 12 innings - after the Trojans fell behind 4-0 but rallied for an 8-7 win.

"We're not going to save a thing," Tiger coach Hi Simmons said. "Not even a dime."

As it turned out, Missouri's pitching might have been about 10 cents short. Elmer Harbin's wild streak in the third, when he threw 12 balls in a row to start dissipating a 4-0 lead, was the turning point.

In the 12th, John O'Donoghue gave up an infield single to open the inning. After the runner advanced on a sacrifice and infield out, Mike Blewett, one of only three seniors for USC, poked a long drive to right to end the game.

It was the Trojans' first CWS title since 1948.

Most Outstanding Player

Bill Thom, Southern California

Thom entered the title game with two out in the eighth after Missouri had tied it 7-7. He allowed only one hit the rest of the way to earn the win for USC.

The right-hander worked 13 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings against Missouri in the Trojans' final two games, including a three-hit shutout to get USC into the finals. Thom allowed two earned runs in 21 1/3 innings during the CWS, striking out 21 and giving up 13 hits.
