Oklahoma State power tops Arizona

Series highlights

There's nothing quite as damaging as the long ball.

Oklahoma State, in its first trip to the CWS finals, demonstrated its effectiveness as the Big Eight champs hit two homers, a triple and a double to top Arizona 5-3 for the national title.

Third baseman Jim Dobson triggered the extra-base bombardment. He rocketed a 385-foot blast over the left-center field fence with one out in the fourth inning, his second homer in as many nights.

Dick Soergel, a Cowboys letterman in football, basketball and baseball, came on in relief in the fourth to get Oklahoma State out of a jam.

The Cowboys rallied from a 3-2 deficit with three runs in the seventh to make a winner out of Soergel. Soergel had suffered the only loss of his collegiate career three days earlier by the same 5-3 score to Arizona.

Most Outstanding Player

Jim Dobson, Oklahoma State

The third baseman batted .455 through his team's six games and homered for the Cowboys' first run in their title-game win over Arizona.

His 10 hits in 22 at-bats included a double, triple and two homers for a .864 slugging percentage for the sophomore, who didn't join the squad until late spring because of football practice.

On defense, his diving stop on a ground shot saved a run and enabled Oklahoma State to squeeze home the tying run in the ninth inning of a 4-3 win against Penn State in an elimination game.
