Arizona State's Sal Bando, the series' most outstanding player, set records of 21 total bases and 12 hits to lead the Sun Devils. Bando also tied the record of four doubles and 10 runs scored.
Rick Monday put the Sun Devils on the board first with a solo homer in the first inning. The Buckeyes tied the game at one when Don Harkins hit an RBI double in the fourth inning
Bando tripled in the sixth inning and scored on a sacrifice fly for the winning run.
Ohio State pitcher Steve Arlin, who pitched the final two innings in the championship game, set a CWS record for most strikeouts (20) and innings pitched (15) in a single game against Washington State earlier in the CWS.
