Series highlights

The Trojans captured their fourth straight College World Series championship — and ninth overall — downing Arizona State 4-3 in front of more than 12,000 fans at Rosenblatt Stadium.

After relinquishing an early 4-0 lead, USC won in dramatic fashion — shutting out the Sun Devils in the final three innings. USC sophomore pitcher Jeff Reinke retired the final 11 batters to preserve the victory — the second against Arizona State in the CWS.

Senior first baseman Daryl Arenstein became the first player to perform on four CWS championship clubs. Though hitless in the in the championship game, Arenstein held up his reputation on defense — playing errorless baseball.

Finishing the season 51-11, Southern California became the fifth team to win the College World Series in Omaha without a loss. The others: Oklahoma (1951), California (1957) and USC (1961, 1968).

Most Outstanding Player

Dave Winfield, Minnesota

The All-American slugger was voted MVP — as a pitcher.

Winfield’s two dominating pitching performances in the 1973 CWS also marked the last time he stepped on to the mound. He might have been the finest all-around athlete ever to play at Rosenblatt — he was drafted four times in three different sports.

Winfield opened the CWS by holding Oklahoma to six singles in a 1-0 victory. He struck out 14.

Winfield played the outfield in the next two games, then returned to the mound to face unbeaten USC, which had a lineup loaded with future major leaguers.

Pitching on three days’ rest, Winfield made the Trojans look like a bunch of Little Leaguers for eight of the most dominating innings ever pitched in Omaha. He took a 7-0 lead into the ninth, having allowed only an infield single by Ed Putnam.

He struck out 15 Trojans.

Winfield played every position but pitcher and catcher in a 21-year major league career.
