USC streak was still intact

Series highlights

One streak was broken, but the one that counted most remained as Southern Carolina claimed its fifth straight championship with a 7-3 win over Miami.

Appropriately, the win wasn't easy for the Trojans. A fitting climax to a season that saw them suffer more losses (50-20) and more adversity than in any other of their nine previous titles.

A crowd of 11,340 at Rosenblatt Stadium was treated to quite a few twists of fate and excitement in the contest, including a seventh-inning streaking man.

The streaker's journey — that included a stop at home plate to take a mock swing with a pink plastic bat — ended when he was apprehended outside the stadium after a run through right field.

The excitement was enough to make Miami fans forget about USC's victory by the time the awards were presented.

Most Outstanding Player

George Milke, Southern California

The pitcher earned his third win of the series against Miami in the title game. All three wins came against the two teams co-ranked No. 1 coming into the tournament — winning twice against Texas before working five innings of relief against Miami, in which he allowed two hits and struck out five.

Milke, a sophomore, pitched 22 innings with a 1.66 ERA while going 3-0 in the series.

"All I was worried about was getting the ball over the plate," said Milke.
