Series highlights

Cal State Fullerton pitcher Dave Weatherman — an appropriate starter on a chilly 58-degree June night — had a dream before taking the mound in Rosenblatt Stadium.

The dream was he would pitch the Titans to the College World Series championship, retiring the last batter on a slider for strike three.

Weatherman's dream was realized, but the ending came in a different fashion.

"Their last batter smoked a fastball," Weatherman said, "but you can't help that."

Cal State Fullerton defeated Arkansas 2-1 in the championship game.

Cal State Fullerton had played in only one previous CWS, going 0-2 under coach Augie Garrido in 1975. Arkansas had never before qualified for the CWS.

Most Outstanding Player

Tony Hudson, Cal State Fullerton

Hudson pitched in four games and was credited with three saves, holding opponents scoreless in 11 2/3 innings.

Hudson gave up four hits in the series and struck out nine.
