University of Nebraska Eleven Wins After an Exciting and Pretty Game

A cold wind blew across the Y.M.C.A. field yesterday afternoon, and the 400 admirers of foot ball shivered as they watched the game between the Y.M.C.A. and the University of Nebraska eleven.

It was far too cold a day for a game, but there was a great deal of enthusiasm manifested, as the contest was between the victorious local team and the captors of the pennant in the Inter-Collegiate league. The field was in excellent shape and the boys of both elevens played with vigor. The university eleven was much heavier and rougher than the Christians and they upon several occasions displayed a temper that was not in keeping with the game or the day. George Flippin, the captain of the visitors, was not soon to realize his strength as he roughly threw the local boys and fairly trod upon them.

In the first half there was lively skirmishing by both teams, but the home team punished moving forward, and Gardner made a fine run, and the result was that almost before the visitors knew it, Burdick had made a touch-down and Gardner successfully kicked a goal, making the score 6 to 0 in favor of the Y.M.C.A. Talk about your enthusiasm! Just let your imagination run riot!

The second half was in favor of the university boys, although the Christians fought desperately and endeavored in an heroic manner to head them off, but Flippin made a hard run and followed it up with a touch-down, and Fayer kicked a goal and then tied the score.

In the last of the second half, despite the frequent fouling, the referee did not "call down" the foulers, and the result was that the university players eventually forced the ball to their goal, and in fifteen minutes had landed Flippin over the line with a touch-down, but Fayer missed kicking the goal, and the score was 10 to 6 in favor of the university. The remainder of the half neither eleven scored, and the representatives of the university went off the field proudly with the banner of victory.
