Lincoln, Neb., Oct. 26 — In a featureless and rather listless game, Coach Stiehm’s protégés stepped on the lads from Adrian college, Michigan, here today with a score of 41 to 0. Adrian was hopelessly outclassed throughout.
Three times, however, the plucky Adrianites braced within their ten-yard line and held Nebraska for downs, only once did they do so in the middle of the field. Adrian made her downs only three times; twice by use of the forward pass and once by line bucking.
Nebraska was erratic in her success with the forward pass. The Cornhuskers used it ten times, with failures on four attempts, no gains on two attempts and a total gain of fifty-seven yards on the other four attempts.
Purdy starred for Nebraska, pulling off several long runs. Towle, playing at quarter for Potter the regular, who is out with injuries, showed good generalship. Harmon and Meyer, two other regulars, were also out of it because of injuries.
Keith, the Adrian coach, substituted for one of his ends at one time during the game. Byrd, Adrian’s well known fullback, was not in the game on account of injuries.
The first touchdown came within four minutes of the opening play, the Cornhuskers carrying the ball straight down the field without interruption. Three minutes later the second touchdown came, a few shifts being contributed to its making. Purdy made the first touchdown. Towle, the second. Adrian kicked off again and Nebraska carried the ball to the enemy’s twenty-yard line, where Purdy broke through on an off tackle play for a squirming run to a touchdown.
Changes in the line-up made the game more even during the second quarter. Beck went in for Purdy and Hawkins for Frank. Nebraska scored only once during this period.
Towle opened the third quarter with a fifty-yard return from the kick-off. Three attempts at drop kick and one at a place kick failed during this quarter. Sala, Adrian’s half, caught an attempted goal kick on the goal line and ran it back for thirty yards.
In the fourth quarter Purdy broke away on another squirming run for forty yards, reaching the Adrian five-yard line. Here the Northerners held. Allen’s block of a punt and Pearson’s recovery and run of thirty-five yards for a touchdown ended the game.
Nebraska was penalized often for holding and hurdling, being set back ninety yards for seven different offenses.
Nebraska is 1-0 all-time against Adrian.
