Highland (Kan.) Community College defensive end Joe Keels decommitted from Wisconsin and made his commitment to Nebraska known (via Twitter) on Dec. 10.

In nine games during the 2013 season, Keels had 18 tackles (13 solo), five tackles for loss, two sacks and one fumble recovery.

NU coach Bo Pelini and assistant Rich Kaczenski flew a private plane through a snowstorm, Keels said, to see the defensive end's family.

"Family is everything to me, so for the Nebraska coaches to do that meant a lot to me," said Keels, a high three-star/low four-star prospect. "My mom liked the coaches a lot, as much as I did. She thought (Nebraska) was the place for me."

According to, Keels held offers from Wisconsin, Alabama, West Virginia, Ohio State, Texas, Oregon, USC and others.

Keels says he'll give it his all at Nebraska, where he plans to enroll in January.

"I'm easy to get along with, but on the field, I don't care if the score's 52-0, we're playing until there are zeroes on the clock," Keels said.

Keels became the 18th known commit of the Huskers' 2014 class and joins Gretna's Mick Stoltenberg as the second defensive end in the class. Keels joins 2013 NU recruit A.J. Natter -- another defensive end -- as just the second Husker from Wisconsin since 2000.
