Jim McFarland came to Nebraska on a baseball scholarship. He'd eventually become an All-Big Eight selection as a tight end in 1969. He finished his Husker career with 53 career receptions for 625 yards. He was inducted into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame in 1999.

The St. Louis Cardinals drafted McFarland in the seventh round of the 1970 NFL Draft. He spent six seasons in the league and caught seven career passes with two touchdowns.
