Heading into his senior season at Elkhorn South, Cooper Jewett didn’t know whether he’d have the opportunity play Division-I football.

Jewett fulfilled a dream Wednesday — signing to walk on at Nebraska.

“This was absolutely crazy to me. I have been dreaming of playing Division-I football — more specifically for the Huskers — since fifth or sixth grade,” Jewell said.

Jewett waited his turn behind record-breaking running back Moses Bryant before his senior year. Bryant, who finished his career at Elkhorn South as the state's all-time 11-man leader in touchdowns (105), was a walk-on in NU's 2018 class.

“Cooper prepared himself as the starter even when he was the backup to Moses," Elkhorn South football coach Guy Rosenberg said. "He has always been ready to play when he had opportunities for us and that was due to his preparation long before the lights came on on Friday nights.”

Jewett had 164 carries for 1,074 yards and 16 touchdowns, plus 21 receptions for 365 yards and two touchdowns during his breakout senior season. He added 55 total tackles and two interceptions while playing safety for the Storm.

“I’m being recruited as a running back, but I am willing to play anything if it means playing time on Saturdays. I’m willing and able to adapt and be wherever Coach (Scott) Frost and the rest of the staff needs me,” Jewett said.

Jewett received the offer to walk on well after the end of his senior season.

“I was in contact with Coach (Ryan) Held in late December and then finalized everything recently with Coach (Kenny) Wilhite. But from the moment they (offered) me, I knew if I could make it happen financially I would take the offer,” Jewett said.

“I'm very excited to have two Elkhorn South players playing for Nebraska," Rosenberg said. "Coach Frost and his staff are 100 percent class and I'm looking forward to having Cooper and Moses be in on the ground floor of what they are all building together in Lincoln.”

Jewett is excited for where Nebraska is headed: “I am beyond blessed to have the opportunity to play for a team that’s headed back to being a national championship contender.”
