Nebraska missed on one of its top remaining targets Monday when four-star wide receiver Desmond Fitzpatrick announced his commitment to Louisville.

The Huskers were the perceived favorite entering the final week of the recruiting cycle. But Fitzpatrick’s official visit to Louisville this past weekend was enough to convince him to rejoin the Cardinals’ class.

He announced the decision with a video released by Bleacher Report, pre-recorded with multiple different endings depending on the school he chose. Fitzpatrick didn’t finalize that choice until the day he announced it.

Fitzpatrick, from Waterford (Mich.) Mott, had been committed to Louisville for about a year when Nebraska targeted him with an offer in September 2015. That convinced him to consider the Huskers, and he took an official visit to Lincoln on Nov. 7 for the game against Michigan State. That trip left such an impression that a few weeks later, Fitzpatrick decommitted from Louisville.

But the Cardinals never gave up, and on Monday they officially got him back on board.

NU’s now left with two receivers in the 2016 class — JD Spielman and Derrion Grim — but Fitzpatrick was rated higher than both. Fitzpatrick is a consensus four-star prospect and the nation’s No. 50 wide receiver, according to the 247 composite.

Keith Williams was his lead recruiter.

Fitzpatrick, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound receiver, had 60 receptions for 1,317 yards and 23 touchdowns as a senior. He also played corner in high school and recorded seven interceptions, including two returned for touchdowns, with 12 pass breakups and 50 tackles.

NU still has two top targets left to announce their decisions between now and National Signing Day. Four-star safety Lamar Jackson will make his choice public Tuesday and Isaiah Simmons, an athlete projected to play receiver, will announce Wednesday.
