McMullen, one of the top 10 prospects in the state of Ohio, became the fourth commit of the 2012 class with his pledge to the Huskers.

“I talked to the defensive coordinator and the defensive line coach. I’m going to call coach (Bo) Pelini tonight,” McMullen said on June 23.

The Nebraska defense was a huge part of McMullen’s decision.

“I’m a defensive guy and in the last three or four years Nebraska has had some great defensive lines. They had Ndamukong Suh and then there’s Jared Crick. It’s a defensive minded school and Bo Pelini is a defensive coach.”

The 6-foot-4 and 260-pound McMullen had been a varsity starter since his freshman season when he had 12 sacks. During his sophomore season McMullen had 11.5 sacks among his 41 tackles. In 2012, McMullen had 11 sacks and was third on his team in tackles.

McMullen had over a dozen scholarship offers including Ohio State, Oregon, Notre Dame, Michigan State and Michigan.

McMullen runs a 4.6 40-yard dash and has the size to be a difference-maker early in his career. The Husker coaching staff succeeded in pulling McMullen from the important recruiting state of Ohio and fended off interest from Ohio State and Notre Dame.

With McMullen, Nebraska is getting a confident game-changer at defensive end who has the size to thrive on a Big Ten defensive line. Against some of the top talent at the Semper Fidelis All-American game in January, McMullen stood out for his constant motor and explosiveness when getting after the quarterback. McMullen’s recruitment also showed the importance of getting a recruit on campus for the spring game. McMullen bought into Nebraska early, committed in late-June and stuck with the Huskers despite late interest from a number of schools.
