Jacob Herbek had options, good ones, so he didn’t accept a walk-on from Nebraska right when he got it in the fall.
But after he took his visit and sat down with his family, the two-way Grand Island Central Catholic player just couldn’t say no to Husker football.
“It was a great opportunity and I couldn’t pass it up,” said the 6-foot-5, 210-pound Herbek, who announced Monday night he was walking on at NU. He expects to pack on weight and play tight end for the Huskers.
“I’ll do whatever they want me to do,” Herbek, who caught 24 passes for 436 at tight end and logged 72 tackles — 23 for loss — and five sacks at defensive end.
The work on defense had Nebraska-Kearney, Augustana, Northwest Missouri State and Southwest Minnesota State extending offers. FCS schools South Dakota and South Dakota State were interested, too. Herbek took visits but ultimately turned down scholarships for a spot on Nebraska’s roster.
He’s the 19th known walk-on for the 2019 recruiting class. He’s also the third walk-on commit in the last two days.
Herbek plays basketball for the Crusaders and runs the hurdles and throws the discus in track. He called GICC — the alma mater of former Husker John Parrella — “one of a kind.”
These are the players who built Nebraska football.
