Even though Nebraska moved quarterback Jamal Turner to wide receiver during spring camp, the Huskers were still looking to land several wide receivers for the 2012 recruiting class.

The one high-profile target who visited for the 2011 spring game was Lombard (Ill.) Montini Catholic’s Jordan Westerkamp, who verbally committed to NU on May 6, 2011. He selected Nebraska over Michigan State, Minnesota, Cincinnati, Illinois and Iowa, among others.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Westerkamp has a four-star ranking and a 90 rating from 247Sports. He caught 89 passes for 1,631 yards and 21 touchdowns as a junior and has 140 catches, 2687 yards and 37 touchdowns in his career.

Westerkamp met with NU head coach Bo Pelini for a half-hour during his unofficial visit in April.

“It was pretty great,” he told 247Sports, a recruiting partner to The World-Herald. "Great football tradition. The stadium, it seemed like the total package when I was there. I enjoyed everything, the parents enjoyed it. It seemed like everything was clicking there.”

He picked up some late interest from Notre Dame, but decided to stay a Husker.

Westerkamp finished his senior season with 90 catches for 1,695 yards and 29 touchdowns — even as teams created schemes to try and stop the talented wideout. He had arguably his finest game in the Illinois 5A state finals, hauling in 12 passes for 353 yards and five touchdowns, including a 94-yard catch that sparked Montini to a 70-45 victory. Westerkamp finished his career as Illinois’ all-time career leader in catches (235), receiving yards (4,618) and touchdowns (68). He impressed at the Semper Fidelis All-American Game in January, where he joined Nebraska signees Greg McMullen and Jared Afalava. He was also a USA Today first-team All-American.
