Josh Sewell transferred to Nebraska from Indiana State in 2001. He eventually won the job at center in 2003, starting every game that season for a team that went 10-3 and won the Alamo Bowl.

Sewell was drafted in the sixth round of the 2004 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos but spent the following season on their practice squad. He retired from football the next year, but reemerged in 2007 with the Frankfurt Galaxy of the NFL Europa League, playing one season there.
