Sam Cotton, a tight end from Lincoln Southeast, had two football offers before committing to Nebraska in June 2011.
Cotton joined the Huskers where his father, Barney, handles the offensive line and is associate head coach to Bo Pelini.
“He told me if I wanted to go anywhere else that I could,” Sam Cotton said. “But I pretty much wanted to come here.”
Cotton will join not only his father but also his two brothers when he gets to NU for the 2012 season. Ben, a tight end, will be a senior in 2012 and Jake, an offensive lineman, will be a sophomore.
And Sam Cotton said he likes the idea of all four being together.
“It's hard to pass up an opportunity to play with your brothers and a chance to play for your dad,” he said. “That would be everybody's dream.”
Sam Cotton finished his Husker camp June 11, 2011, and received an NU offer over the weekend. Although Cotton believes he showed well at camp, the 6-foot-4, 235-pounder said he wasn't really expecting the offer.
“It caught me off guard,” he said, “because I thought if I got one it'd be further down the road.”
Cotton had offers from Tulsa, where former NU assistant Scott Downing is assistant head coach, and Ohio, where Frank Solich is head coach and his staff includes several others with Husker ties.
Cotton said NU staff members told him “they really, really liked my ball skills and route-running, and that I could block, too.” Larsen said Cotton has a long stride and runs faster than he looks.
A World-Herald All-Nebraska captain, Cotton was a two-way starter for 2011 Class A state champion Southeast. He finished with 27 catches for 300 yards and seven touchdowns. Sam Cotton was a stalwart at tight end and defensive end, and improved as a route runner and pass catcher.
Cotton will be the second Lincoln Southeast tight end to sign with Nebraska in a two-year span: David Sutton was part of the Huskers' 2011 recruiting class. Sutton and Cotton were the Knights' starting defensive ends last season, and Cotton joined Sutton on offense when the Knights went to two-tight end sets.
