Joanne Stewart

Senior Management

Position: Assistant managing editor

What I do: I work with the News Copy and Presentation Desks on execution of the daily and Sunday papers. I also coordinate with the department heads overseeing Money, Special Sections and the Library. And I handle such special projects as managing the news space budget and overseeing coverage of the company's annual Goodfellows campaign.

About me: I am an Omaha native and started in The World-Herald newsroom as a messenger while a student at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. After earning my BA in journalism in May 1976, I joined the Regional News Desk as a copy editor and reporter. In November 1979, I became the first woman on the City Desk assigning/editing team -- as night city editor. I held a variety of editing roles on that desk and was named Metro Editor in February 1996. I have been an assistant managing editor since July 1998.
