Fall Arts Preview

Classical & Jazz

By Betsie Freeman / World-Herald staff writer

You can take a musical journey in the coming year without ever leaving the city.

The University of Nebraska at Omaha School of Music’s International Concert Series will be one of your vehicles. The school’s new director, Washington Garcia, says he created the series “to bring the world to Omaha.”

It begins on Sept. 15 with Russian-born cellist Misha Quint and will feature artists from Cuba, Spain and other locales.

Your journey also can include some time-travel back to the days of the Bard at the Omaha Symphony’s Shakespeare Festival, set for two nights in January. On Jan. 21, the orchestra will perform the music of Sergei Prokofiev, Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and William Walton, all based on plays by William Shakespeare. On Jan. 27, Hector Berlioz and Felix Mendelssohn are the composers.

You can round out your itinerary with trips to the Big Apple and the Emerald Isle.

The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, from New York City, will perform “Big Band Holidays” at the Holland Center on Dec. 2. And Omaha Performing Arts also is offering a concert by The Irish Tenors on Feb. 9 at the Holland.

It might be a good idea to renew those passports.
