Fall Arts Preview

Theater

By Betsie Freeman / World-Herald staff writer

Omaha theater in the coming season will feature beloved old stories, exciting new works and a Shakespeare classic presented in an innovative way.

The Omaha Community Playhouse chose a traditional French fairy tale set to music for its season-capping show in 2017. “Beauty and the Beast” will premiere May 26 on the Hawks Mainstage at the theater. The show had been on the Playhouse wish list for a few years.

The Shelterbelt Theatre, meanwhile, will produce four plays written by local authors, starting with “Revelation” by University of Nebraska at Omaha professor Samuel Brett Williams. It opens on Oct. 7.

And Nebraska Shakespeare will offer “Juno’s Swans,” an all-women performance of “Richard III,” on July 9.

Elsewhere, two theaters will stage musicals that are anything but mainstream, both based on popular movies: The Blue Barn will open “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert: The Musical” on May 18, and SNAP Productions premieres “Carrie: The Musical” on Jun 2.

Theater fans who take in three or four of these will be assured of a fun, diverse season. Round it out with a Broadway favorite from Omaha Performing Arts — say, “The Sound of Music,” coming Jan. 24 — and you may just achieve perfection.
